Protein Powders Continued - A Look at Young Living's Protein Complete

Welcome back!
I wanted to continue my exploration of protein powders today by looking at Young Living's Protein Complete.  As I mention in my last blog post, I take some grief for limiting the protein powders and bars that I allow on the 28 Day Healthy Reboot. I field more questions about not allowing this protein powder than most others.

Why am I questioned? Because people know that Young Living has a great reputation and uses only the best ingredients. Why would it not be allowed?  

Let me make this very clear - I think protein complete is an excellent product...for some people!  When looking at it through the lenses of anti-inflammatory foods and elimination diets, it fails miserably.

First, look at the protein blend. Whey protein, Goat whey protein, pea protein, egg white protein and hemp seed protein. Each one of these has many benefits and if you are looking to up your healthy protein, this fits the bill. It has 25 grams of protein in two scoops.  

From an anti-inflammatory perspective, whey, pea and egg white protein are all potential inflammatory foods and are eliminated on the 28 Day Healthy Reboot. Only by trialing foods would you be able to know if whey, goat whey, pea or egg might have a negative effect on your body. If you are sensitive, you would want to avoid using this powder and follow a healthy gut protocol. You would then trail the proteins again. If you have no reaction, you would be able to use the product. 

Any product that causes a negative reaction which is an inflammatory response is not good for long term health.

Hemp protein is a great protein source and Young Living will only use a beyond organic hemp source. This is extremely important when consuming hemp.  Protein Complete also has a full range of amino acids to support the body as well as ancient peat. Ancient peat and apple extract contains many elements and trace minerals helpful to the body including magnesium.  (For more information click here.)

Another ingredient that would be off the list are organic-evaporated cane sugar.  The 28 Day Healthy Reboot eliminates all sugars, organic or not, during the program.  Xanthan gum is also on my everyday list to limit the amount of exposure to - it has been known to upset the microbiome balance in the digestive tract.  This does not mean you need to avoid it altogether just keep it in mind if you are going to use it every day. Most emulsifiers, like gums and lecithin, are best used sparingly (but are found in numerous foods!).

So, it is not that I do not approve or do not like Protein Complete. You just need to make sure it is the right protein powder for you.

I will finish by repeating a comment I made in a previous post.  Most people do not need 25 grams of protein in one serving, especially for breakfast.  High intensity athletes or those who need or want a higher protein diet might want to use two scoops, but many can save money and get a good protein hit with just one scoop of this great product.

I am a big proponent of morning smoothies!  They are quick, tasty and the variety you can make them is endless. Anyone who says they do not like them has just not found the right ingredients.

That being said, I often take grief when going over protein powders that are in compliance with my 28 Day Healthy Reboot.  I hear, "My powder is promoted by this holistic doctor" or "This other popular program sells it and says it is the best product to promote health," or my favorite, "It's organic. Why is that bad?" "I don't understand why I cannot use it?"

It has nothing to do with whether it is good or bad or whether you will be able to use it in the future. It has to do with your goal for following my program.  The 28 Day Healthy Reboot and the Healthy Reboot For Life eliminates inflammatory foods as well as foods that cause digestive distress due to sensitivity or allergies. This often means eliminating otherwise healthy ingredients that fall into certain categories. 

Lectins, FODMAPS, dairy, soy, nightshades...the list goes on. This eliminates and whey or casein, soy and rice protein.  Also, I get many questions on a favorite of holistic practitioners, pea protein (a lectin).  Many also fall short because they are not organic or grass/pastured products. 

Does this mean you can never eat them again? Of course not!  What you need to do is determine if you have sensitivity to the food category. If you are sensitive, you will need to determine why and how to heal whatever issue you might be experiencing. If you have no reaction, you can add it back in at the end of the program. If you find you are allergic, you will need to avoid it or suffer the consequences of a reaction.  

I have featured Vital Proteins in this post.  I use this product almost daily - I like the chocolate flavor best.  It is made from grass fed and pastured collagen peptides and contains essential amino acids your body needs.  Best of all, the suggested serving size is two scoops for a total of 18 grams of protein.  I only use one scoop per day because 9 grams of protein is plenty for my morning smoothie.  If I add blanched almonds, hemp seeds or other protein containing ingredients, I am getting more than enough protein. 

We do not need as much protein as you think! Many people consume too much protein daily.  There are exceptions like body builders or anyone who has been told by a medical professional they need more protein. But the average person does not need as much protein as we generally eat in a day (We will save this topic for another blog post!).

I do need to note that Vital Proteins was bought out by a big corporation a few years ago. When this happens, they often mess with the ingredients to bring down the manufacturing costs.  I have not seen this happen yet, but I carefully read the label each time I buy a bottle.  You can find it in many stores, but Costco has the best price I have ever found. 

I will finish with this - as with anything, you get what you pay for.  Inexpensive protein powders are inexpensive because they do not use the highest quality ingredients.  If you are consuming smoothies every day, you need to be using a quality product that work for you.  Only you will know what is right after finishing a program like the 28 Day Healthy Reboot.

Happy New Year from the Grateful Heart Farm and the Healthy Reboot program!  May 2023 be the best year ever!

Every year millions of Americans set a New Year's resolution...to give up a bad habit, to exercise more, spend more time with family, lose weight or to eat healthier foods.  I know many that fall into the "eat healthier" category.

My New Year's resolution is to help all of you who want to make better choices a little easier.  My goal is to highlight products, recipes as well as provide education on how to make better choices.

I will start by highlighting some clean protein powders.  There is no better way to jump start your morning routine than by chewing a great tasting smoothie (why chew your smoothie...I bet some of you will know the answer to that comment!).

I love Perfect Keto collagen protein powders, protein bars and the MCT powder.  They have other products...but these really stand out for me.  They are clean, well made, taste good, and for those who subscribe, the price is moderate.  Believe me when I say, there are no really clean bars at a cheap price.

I only see one ingredient that if I could have the perfect bar might not be there - that would be the acacia gum.  Something has to hold it all together and it is the better of the options.  I like that it has only nine grams of protein as I do not think you need much more than that for breakfast or a snack. Especially if you are going to add in other ingredients like hemp seeds or a nut butter that have protein too.  Very few individuals need 18 - 28 grams of protein in one serving every day.

How To Build and Maintain a Healthy Immune System

Everyone realizes that a healthy immune system is important to good health.  Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the factors that affect a healthy immune system.  Many people feel that taking vitamins and minerals or eating a somewhat healthy diet will provide all the protection they need.  Don’t get me wrong – these are important!  Yet there are other lifestyle factors that should be monitored to make sure you are making the most of your immune health.

Vitamins and minerals are an important part of your health. In today’s world you just cannot get what you need from the foods you eat.  Mark Hyman, MD has a favorite saying, “If you grow your own fruits and veggies, pasture raise your own meat, eat nothing manufactured, get 7-8 hours of sleep, have no stress and do not use a cell phone or exposure to WIFI, you are right, you do not need to supplement…but if you do any of those you will likely need to add something into your routine.” I am paraphrasing but you get the point.  The question should really be not if but what.

Here are some basics:

  1. 70-80 percent of your immune system is located in your gut and is determined by the health of your microbiome, the healthy and not so healthy bacteria that live on and inside your body.  Humans have a symbiotic relationship with these bacteria. They help us breathe, move, digest food, process emotions and help keep us healthy.  Bottom line – unhealthy microbiome, unhealthy immune system.
  2. Adequate sleep is also important to stay healthy. According to Matthew Walker, PhD states in his book, Why We Sleep, “A balanced diet and exercise are of vital importance, yes. But we now see sleep as a preeminent force in this health trinity.” He also states, “Plentiful sleep maintains a flourishing microbiome within your gut from which we know so much of your nutritional health begins.”
  3. Stress is another factor that should not be overlooked.  When you are under stress you produce cortisol, the fight or flight stress hormone.  Cortisol has been known to suppress your immune system (and your digestion system) to keep your body on full alert.
  4. It should be no surprise that the quality of your food also has a great impact on your health. Processed foods and sugars, alcohol, too much caffeine, genetically modified foods and inflammatory foods like omega 6 oils, dairy, soy and wheat to name a few, all can put a strain on your body and immune system.

These are only a few of the lifestyle factors that can affect your health but take time to address these areas and you will be well on your way to strengthening your immune system!

But what about vitamins and minerals – which ones should I take?  This is a conversation best to be had with your primary care physician.   Here are a few tips:

  • Make a list of the vitamins minerals and supplements you are currently taking and why. Be sure to include the dosage of each one.
  • Compare that to the RDA (Recommended daily allowance) or the suggestion by your health care provider.
  • Now create a list of your health goals. What is it you are looking to achieve?   Protection from colds and flus? Brain health? Heart health? Digestive support? It might help to prioritize these.
  • A few basic options in today’s world seem to be a quality Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Zinc. I have also heard that a quality Omega 3 can be helpful. (No diagnosing here, just making an observation – check with your doctor!)
  • Quality does matter!  You might be better off not taking something than taking a poor-quality supplement that the body cannot assimilate.

What else can you do to support your immune system?

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Eat healthy foods limiting processed, sugary and genetically modified products including alcohol.
  • Watch your stress. Make sure you find a way to reduce stress through yoga, meditation, or some other activity.
  • Limit WIFI exposure, especially at night when you are sleeping.

Another overcast day here in Tennessee but warmer – I will gladly take warmer but wet over super cold and dry!  As I sit at my kitchen island looking out my window, I am watching beautiful cardinals work my birdfeeder and the small herd of deer are roaming the upper field grazing on the grass.  A great way to start the day and a good way to have breakfast…calming and enjoyable – you will learn why this is important in the third and final video on digestion.

In the first video, I discussed why healthy digestion is important. The second video was a simple explanation of how digestion works. Today’s video wraps it all up by discussing how to support healthy digestion.
